Featured Greek recipes in the MasterChef UK competition

Traditional Greek cuisine as culinary inspiration
Flavors that carry history
During the filming of MasterChef UK in Greece, I carefully selected the ingredients and recipes to highlight the range of unique products central to our cuisine.
Wild greens, herbs of every kind, vegetables, legumes, seafood, poultry, and meat took center stage on the Greek table set amid the natural landscapes of Attica. Olive oil, feta, yogurt, and wine – essential elements of our culinary tradition – played a special role in the competition. Each ingredient and product carried its own symbolism within the menu.
Wild greens, herbs, seafood, and legumes tell stories of long-standing traditions. Meat and poultry showcase local farming, while seafood connects every corner of our country, from the Ionian to the Aegean. Pies, though humble, possess their own grandeur and symbolize hospitality in every Greek home. And of course, extra virgin olive oil, the heart of the Mediterranean diet, brings life to every dish.
Tradition meets contemporary gastronomy
Greek traditional cuisine is not merely a thing of the past; it is alive and modern. It embodies principles now recognized as culinary trends: zero food waste, seasonality, farm-to-table, nose-to-tail – all practices deeply rooted in its DNA.
A challenge for the contestants
For the participants, the challenge was significant: to create dishes rooted in tradition, yet expressing their own identity. They rolled dough for pies, cooked kid goat fricassee with avgolemono, stuffed squid with unique fillings, and prepared beans with greens.
Every dish was more than a recipe. It was a story – of the land, the ingredients, and the people.
Greek cuisine as a whole emerged as a focal point for millions of viewers worldwide. From Macedonia and Epirus to Crete, from the Ionian to the Aegean, each recipe narrated the story of the region. Greek cuisine is not only about taste but also a cultural heritage. It has soul and history, which shone clearly on MasterChef UK.
It was an honor to guide the contestants through their first steps in Greek cooking.
I am also immensely proud of the participants, who gave their best to honor Greek recipes with respect and love.
